Things I have learned in the past 24 hours

  • Websites that claim you'll never be able to get them taken down are quite easy to get taken down
  • Legal threats are an excellent way of obtaining information
  • The IP address used to subscribe me (and several others) to a vast number of mailing lists was 68.57.223.4. Which seems to belong to Ryan Farmer. "Fucking hero", my arse.
Edited to add:

Just in case anyone thought I was being unfair here.

Yeah, I wish 13-year olds would just stick to drinking cheap beer in the park and trying to get laid, rather than having anything to do with me (with the bonus that the odds of getting punched in the face are far higher). On the upside, it didn't take an eternity to clear my inbox.

Even if not, he'll have enough problems once word gets round that that's the sort of crap he gets up to.

spamza

Did the guy used that spamza.com "service" (that fortunately is not online anymore) that was at 67.212.9.36?

Did you manage to get their logs? I suppose many other people would love to see them. 8)

Seriously though, I'm not convinced in the logic of "mimicing the Windows" in ACPI, even though Matthew explained it in very convincing detail. Regardless of the sophistry, it's an excellent way to surrender the agenda to Microsoft. Perhaps in ACPI it's not as dangerous, considering that we have parts of Intel pushing for per-capability checks in reference implementations, but look at the bigger picture. Miggie alone is scandalous. Personally, I have exposure to USB side of things and found "follow the Windows" not entirely satisfactory.

Seems the fella has a hard time understanding how you can be tracked through your IP.

'Ubuntu' and 'kernel' in the same sentence.

So what is his problem with you, exactly? Do you think he was pissed after you proved him wrong over the ACPI stuff and took it personally? I didn't see any open flaming before this event.

Is signing people up for spam a violation of Comcast's AUP I wonder?

http://www.comcast.net/terms/use/

It prohibits spam, though he could claim that spamza did the actual spamming. It also prohibits impersonation, and the spamza site is only vaguely legal based on the fiction that people are signing themselves up for spam. Finally of course, he could just claim he's not doing it.

But Comcast probably has logs, and he's probably the sort of person that's violating their AUP in all sorts of ways because he's a highly arrogant sociopath. So why not contact them? At least it'll get him off your back. Seems far better than having a long running public dispute with the guy which will inevitably damage your reputation from blowback.

So, did the IP come from the spamsite owner or not?

Hey Matthew,
completely unrelated 3rd party here, but can you show some evidence that you got the IP from the guy you say you got it from? I think he'd be easy to convince to... rea$$e$$ his role on this, but then, you might have been a bit overeager to find the spammer.

I can, yes. If you've got some reason to see it, let me know by email.
