The onus shouldn't be on the offended to justify themselves - the onus should be on the original authors to attempt to understand why they've caused offense.

I used to be a Christian, and while I have great disagreements with most Christians about issues of religion I still believe that Jesus (as described in the bible) was a good person and deserves some respect. I don’t believe that blasphemy should be illegal, but some minimum standards should be observed when discussing religion. Next there is the issue of child molesting, most people agree that there’s nothing amusing in that - so I hope that nothing more needs to be said about violating babies....

IV - hopping around on remaining foot, not realizing the other one is gone.

That would actually be a good argument, if [info]mjg59 were trying to tell the people he offended why they shouldn't have been. Which he isn't. Or if - ironically - he'd made the tasteless comment on one of the Planets, against the stated policy, rather than in his blog here. Which he didn't.

So, would you like to argue that the Planet Debian content guidelines should apply to all of LiveJournal? Or just this blog? Or maybe something easier, like the similarity between apples and ambulances?

I'm gonna pay for this, but saw (II), and then I saw (I) and (IV), and my intellectual consistency meter broke.

My gut reaction was to argue that Russell did not understand the usage of references to making baby Jesus cry, and that his misunderstanding led to whatever offense he may have felt. But according to Matthew's own stated policy, the onus is on him to "attempt to understand why [he] has caused offense". Repeated snark lends credence to the claim that a good faith effort to do so was probably not engaged in.

I think the problem lies in the policy. There ought to be a give and take; "I'm offended; figure it out and/or shut up" locks down a conversation. On the other hand, some people just don't get it when it comes to certain things, and never will, even if you beat them with pans. The onus, I suggest, should be on the group, to come to a state of mutual understanding and respect. Then there should be a sing-a-long and M&Ms. The end.
