The day I stop crying myself to sleep over the free software community is likely to be fairly closely associated with the day when we think OMG-a-girling is even more embarrassing than the fact that there are so few women involved to begin with that someone might think they needed to point it out.

AARGH! There are always low numbers of women involved in IT. I've often been the only girl where I've worked but no-one makes anything of it and if they did I'd deck them.
*hugs* the fc.

Especially low in free software. There are many reasons for this - and some of this is the culture.

I was kind of thinking the same thing when I read that post. Yea, females aren't represented well in IT, and great!, we have some working in OpenSource, too. All good things. But pointing them out like they were something extraordinary that deserved special attention doesn't serve a purpose either.

JOHNSON. ‘Sir, a woman’s preaching is like a dog’s walking on his hinder legs. It is not done well; but you are surprized to find it done at all.’

Also note that he introduced it as a 'true story' -- as if a woman coding in C was just too fantastical to be believed, so he thought he had to emphasize that it was a true story. Perhaps that wasn't the intent, but that's sure how it reads.

I just couldn't get over how condescending that guy's post was. I second the ARGH.

I'm the only girl geek in the company I've just started working with. Half of them have, admirably, failed to make a big fuss and go 'OMG a gurl' (though they might do when I'm not there, who knows). The other half just stare at me because I have tits you see. That bothers me less than if they questioned my geeking skills. And in fact they seem impressed that my bug-spotting skillz are getting suitably l33t.

If anything, I think I'd get embarrassed if they all started treating me as a unique and speshul snowflake *because* I'm a girl. I am in no way a standard girly girl, and I think they appreciate that and treat me more or less as the sekrit butch ale-drinking dyke I really am...

The only link this comment has with its associated post is that the post was made on my birthday.

Happy birthday!
