What's the deal with the graphics card in the iMac -- I thought we didn't have any kind of drivers for ATI/Avivo chips?

The firmware is nice enough to leave us a linear framebuffer, so we just write into that. Unaccelerated, of course.

not yet. mode setup and 2d engine reportedly completely different from r400 and below, but 3d engine evolutionary relative to r400 so there's some hope.

THANK YOU ATI FOR MAKING YOUR CUSTOMERS HAPPY.

Is it an Intel model or a PowerPC one?
(Anonymous)
2006-03-03 12:36 pm UTC (link)
This is easy to do on a PowerPC model (I have one at work) but the challenge is to run Linux on a macintel (I know it is now possible but not very easy).

I guess it is an new Intel model. Right?

It's still broadcom, and connected via PCI-E at that (yes, I know, because Edgar Hucek had linux running already :) )... And we don't know how to use it yet.

Don't spill wine into your keyboard. Those Apple keyboards get skanky pretty quick.

why would you want it on the imac? its cheaper to just buy a PC and install linux onto it then a intel mac. was it done just for a challenge?

It was done because someone gave me the hardware and asked me to get Ubuntu running on it.

Dear Matthew, I am very glad to see this and I would like to thank you for your work. This month I am buying a 17" iMac (already pre-ordeded it). I am a Linux user since 2002 and I wouldn't like to switch to OS X, but on the other hand I really need a new computer now, so I couldn't wait for an official iMac supporting Ubuntu version. Anyway what you've done is good news for me!

But also, how do I know when there is something ready to install? My iMac will be fresh with clean HDD so I'd be glad to experiment with it and report back.

I downloaded the Ubuntu Live CD for mactel...I presume this is yours? I followed: http://www.mactel-linux.org/wiki/HOWTO#Live_CD

But on bootup holding the option key, all I can click is Mac HD and my External HD.

Do I need to do a sudo bless on any file on the CD (is that even possible)?

If this isn't your Live CD, I apologize.
